Endometriosis is a disease that is defined by tissue that is SIMILAR to the lining of the uterus that is found outside of the uterus.  Endometriosis tissue can bleed during a person's menses.

The symptoms of Endo are very widespread, however, there are classic signs and symptoms.

I have compiled a list of these symptoms, along with their prevalence in a handout.  If you suspect that you may have Endometriosis and your doctor hasn't mentioned it, feel free to download the list and bring it to them for discussion.

The reality is that some people have been found to have a lot of Endo and little to no symptoms, while others can have very little of the disease and a lot of pain.

Bottom line, the amount of tissue involvement DOES NOT correlate with a person's pain experience... as is the case with many other diseases and structural findings in the body.

Currently, the gold standard for treatment is excision surgery. It is crucial that this is performed by a doctor well versed in Endometriosis (see "How do I find a doctor who treats Endo?")

However, Endo is a whole person disease (affecting us physically, psychologically, and emotionally).  It should be addressed with a team approach, not just medically.

Not everyone responds to surgery and medication and there is evidence to show why and how we can use strategies to improve our outcomes with treatment.

The sad truth is that over 10% of people born with a uterus have Endometriosis (some suspect that it is even higher). That is 200 million people worldwide. _(WHO)

Doctors do not learn a lot about this disease in medical school - even though it is equivalent in prevalence to asthma.

Some suspect that like many other "female" diseases, this has not received the attention and research that is needed to help find a cure (which currently DOES NOT exist).

It takes an average of 5-12 years to receive a diagnosis of Endometriosis.

The gold standard for diagnosis of Endometriosis is a laparoscopy with lab verification. 

However, endometriomas (Endometriosis cysts) can be seen on ultrasound, and if a practitioner is trained they may be able to see deep endometriosis on both ultrasound and MRI.
